ABOUT LUCY BEHRENS

Lucy Behrens is a contemporary jewellery designer and maker. She has a background in photography and printmaking and was working as a photographer in 2015 when she bought a piece of jewellery that inspired her to take a three day beginners’ jewellery course - she has been making jewellery ever since. She is passionate about design, working materials by hand, resulting in harmonious forms that need nothing added or taken away. Balance and composition are integral to each piece. She is always looking for new ways to put form and function together, with delicate textural surfaces and misty matte finishes. Design is a process of self scrutiny and this passage is very much evident in Lucy’s approach to making.

Some pieces are hand carved in wax before being cast in silver. Jewellery casting is the process by which a wax pattern is made into a jewellery mould and then filled with molten metal or silver to create a custom piece of jewellery. It is also called lost wax casting because the wax is always “lost” during the process of making jewellery.

Lucy’s jewellery is all made entirely by hand in her Devon studio. She mainly works in Sterling silver, gold items are then very thickly plated in 24ct gold. Rather than fast fashion, Lucy creates timeless pieces that are designed to last and still look beautiful for many years to come.
